Russia Eyes Kenya as Key Trade Hub

Kenya is a lower middle class economy country with a population of nearly 50 million, it is an east African country, whereas Russia is Europe’s one of the largest economies. Despite being a poor country, Kenya is a hub of cheap labour, and attracts entrepreneurs to invest in Kenya and set up their business for the cheap production, and Russian entrepreneurs are not an exception, they are all set to supply agricultural and alcoholica products to Kenya, which will lead the progress of developing a trading house in Nairobi.

On Friday, Vladimir Vishenvsky (Head of the commission for developing relations with Africa at ‘New Formation’), shared the development with TASS, one of Russia’s largest business organization, the meeting was held with the Kenya’s minister for small and medium enterprises and cooperatives, i.e., Ambesta Oparanya. The meeting was formed for the development of Kenya’s economy and to boost the small and medium enterprises by building strong business connections with Russia.

The head of the commission for developing relations with Africa at New Formation highlights the meeting held from November 30 to December 5 in Kenya that the mission of this meeting is discover the business opportunities in multiple fields such as education, logistics, agriculture, and more, with intention to establish a Russian trading house in Kenya, the sale agreement between Kenya and Russia formed, with duly agreed by the respective ministers.

Beatrice Elachi, a member of Kenya’s National Assembly and chair of the parliamentary friendship group with Russia also interacted with the Russian delegation in regard to the friendly relations and discuss the ways to strengthen the Russian-Kenyan economic relations and cultural collaboration, and the potential in other human growth fields such as sports and start of sport related projects.

Later on, the parliamentarian made specific requests for the supply of agricultural and alcoholic products to Kenya, amongst these demands, the southern regions made particular demands for domestic wines and cosmetics products. This visit of Russian entrepreneurs was significant in terms of Kenya’s economic growth. They met with several people such as economists, lawyers, industry experts, agriculturists, and more. The meeting from different industry experts, from tech to agriculture, helped them to understand the Kenyan economy, and address the major issue faced by the people, and allow them to curate an ideal solution for them. The solution includes various perspectives, such as legal, economic, welfare of the society, and how Russian entrepreneurs can help them to import goods from Russia, and how it is a win-win situation for both the countries.

The visit was extended to meeting with several prominent personalities, such as Sergey Fomenko, he is the second secretary at the Russian Embassy in Kenya, and present the companies and draft to penetrate the potential partnership between these two countries with local businesses. This allowed them to exchange information and gain important reports.

This trade meeting helped Russia to form strong economic connections with African countries, and reached the record $24.5 billion level. Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov made the announcement at the first Russia-Africa Partnership Forum Ministerial Conference in Sochi in November. As per the Federal Customs Service of Russia, they have seen a rise of 43% in exports because of African countries.

Apart from African countries, Russia has strong business relationships with Islamic and other Asian countries. Their relations are not so good with western countries, but the rest of the world mostly enjoys trading with Russian entrepreneurs.
